From the vividly orange safflower – seeds have a thick shell that is hard for some birds to crack. Larger birds, like cardinals and grosbeaks, are drawn to the mature hard white seed. Try offering safflower on trays or in hopper feeders since these birds prefer a these type feeders. Squirrels and grackles do not like safflower - making it a good deterrent.
